so one of the most popular questions seems to be "how big can i go on x lift"
please bear in mind just because x size type will fit with your lift its not necessarily a good idea
a stock just drive train will struggle on big tyres , 235 75 15 or 30 9.5 15 being the high end , larger will require a gear change something like a rock lobster and even then the stress is transferred to other components such as drive seats cc joints etc , harden ones are available and are a good idea

Iv always said if its just occasional offroad then all i would do and reccomend to others is a set of 195/80/15 muds and remove anti-roll bar

They will go very well like this which is what i did at the start.

I agree on both of the above....to a point. I'm on 195/80/15 and its made a noticable difference to the gearing. Mine being remoulds against branded. It copes just fine and is great but where i was using 2nd and near tickover for some climbs i'm now down to first and more throttle.

I would suggest as close to stock sizes as possible for anything up to 2" lift personally. Go wider with a better offset rim but not much taller.

This is a discussion that could go on forever. Its like all modifying, where you improve one area it highlights the weaknesses in others.
Its a bit of a catch 22, you want more height and the ability to fit taller tyres to improve diff clearance for even occasional off road which will ideally still need a reduction in gearing(mini lobster?). This then leads you to the argument as to whether you need a lift at all if you're only running near stock tyre sizes.

My personal opinion is that for the average mild off roader the ideal package is better offset rims, stock size muds, 2" lift kit, rear shock relocators.

Im in full agrement with both of you , but it seems most people want the biggest tyres they can squeeze on lol for no other reason than "bigger must be better" but as we have all said that certainly isnt the case .... the correct size for your gearing and use makes much more sense

I agree with your point entirely. I always offer the same advice, drive it and see how it performs. Once you find its limitations then make the appropriate modifications. A lot get hung up on how tall they can get it and as you say what are the biggest tyres i can get under it, all without consideration as to what sort of impact all the work has on other areas. Ultimately of course....will it perform any better for the intended use? IMHO unless you're an experienced off roader it should carry few mods to make you learn to read the terrain better to overcome the limitations. Once you reach the limits of where you can go and eventually start making improvements you will be a far better driver and make the most of the mods.
