Caling all KingPin bearing replacement EXPERTs

How do i get the race (solid piece) out of the axle/hub ... its well and truly stuck in there !!!

I used a blow torch to heat up the knuckle thing and then smacked it out with a lump hammer and a screw driver. Heating up definitely made it easier.

In Martins "How To Guide" www.bigjimny.com/images/documents/Changi...KingPin_Bearings.pdf He puts a blob of weld on the outer race to give himself something to knock out.
I managed mine with a small chisel.

so they come "out" from the inside to the outside then???

yes blob of weld works a treat

I don't have a welder or the knowledge to use one, and my Jimny axle now in pieces ....

I'll go get a blow torch, and have a go with a chisel and a BFH.

its a shame you didnt have a welder, as once the blob went on, and the heat went into it, one tap and it came straight out

Yes. You stick the screw driver through from the back though the other hole. There is about 1mm of race showing that you can just get a purchase on. You should be able to shift them if you heat up around the race.

I found a 1" socket was exactly the right size to drive the race out but be able to go through the hole.

Short extension bar makes it long enough to go through the other race to give you plenty of room to swing the hammer....

Otherwise if you have a dremel grind a notch into the old race to give your chisel something to dig into.


Top tip, when putting your new ones in stick them in the freezer for a bit first so they are nice and cold, they contract a tiny bit and makes them much easier to drive in...
