I used to have a small plate on a sportscar I used to own as the full size one looked stupid and was only a matter of centimetres from the ground so would get knocked off. It was proper font, colour and spacing but was too small and hence illegal. I never got stopped and it passed its MOT no problem.

I also carried a spare full size plate in the boot but when I asked a friend of mine who was a traffic cop they suggested I didn't admit to having a full size plate in the boot. They told me they would be very, very unlikely to pull me for it and would not be best impresssed if I then admitted to it being illegal and pulled out a legal one from the boot. Apparently they would have been much happier if I pleaded ignorance and promised to get it changed.
But that is just one persons opinion... If PC plod is having a bad day you could end up with a fine.
