Diff and Casings Breathers. was created by wanderinstar
One of the next jobs I want to do is fit breather pipes to the diff and gearbox casings. I have seen some people screw fittings in. Is this an easy job. If not how secure are the bits of plastic pipe and jubilee clips?

Hi mate , I bought my kit off ebay before it was available on this site. Its very easy to do, apart from the gear box and the transfer box which is just about impossible without removing it. Just mount the pipe ends in as high place as you can ie snorkel. Good important cheap mod.

Thanks

Once the cap is prised off the diffs, then hose pipe will fit snug and tight, As supplied by Martin in the kits he supplies ( I have the same kit )
This is then reduced down with air hose couplings and air line to look tidy.

My SJ transfer case has had the breather drilled out, tapped and then a Air hose coupling screwed in, this is only possible with the casing opened up or the case will end up full of metal fragments.

Dutchjimny: The transfer case is easy to remove, but the gearbox is a big job.

Ian: Why don't you lower your transfer case down when you fit your KAP brackets? I'm sure the breather is the same as on the diffs so hose pipe will attach to it. The kits Martin has is perfect for the job.

Yes Gary, will do that as I haven't fitted them yet. What sort of a job is gearbox. Can you get at it through top by removing gear lever gaiters?

Basically if you go deeper than half the depth of your wheels, you could do with extending your breathers

Doesn't the gear box already have a breather pipe up in to the engine bay?? I'm fitting hose pipe breathers at the weekend and had only catered for the diffs and two on the transfer box.

Do I need another trip to BandQ for more stuff......?

Answered my own question by going and popping the bonnet - my Y reg 16v manual does NOT have a breather pipe to the engine bay from the gear box! Must have been looking at a different model before.

This isn't what I've got.........
