4x4 Off road track was created by dustyfox
Hello people,
I decided finally to have a go in my jimny off road, over a rough slippery steep gravelled track( you know those forest tracks you see up here in scotland). Well In some spots it struggled and noticed that when the tyres were spinning only the back ones were moving. Is this normal? I did try 4hi and 4lo.
I must point out that some of the track was washed out and had to climb over some boulders and the further I got higher the more snow there was. I also only had standard road tyres on.
And finally I did enjoy it.
Thanks

Was your 4wd light flashing on your dashboard?
Sounds like 4WD wasn't engaged properly if the fronts were not spinning...

No not flashing. About a year ago it was though but this was due to a wheel bearing and since fixing this the 4wd light has lit up as normal when I select 4x4 mode.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Likely that hub is not engaging.
Put it in 4wd with the engine running in neutral handbrake on
Jack up either front wheel
Try and rotate the jacked up wheel.
If it rotates the front hubs are not engaged (most likely) or there is a CV blown, or a failed diff in the front axle.
Assuming the wheel rotates, switch off, still in 4wd.
Carefully remove the black hubs, by undoing the E10 I think, bolts.
If the hub is engaged, the splined bit in the middle will be outwards and it will look locked.
I bet that the grease from the new bearing has blocked up the minute hole through the hub.
With the hub removed, try and blow through the two spigots that the rubber pipes attach on to.
When these are both clear, refit the hub and try again, cycle 4wd 2wd 4wd a few times.
If you listen, you hear Clack-clack, if both engage, and click-click when they disengage.

Right ok, I lifted up the front wheels and they were still spinning when in neutral but 4wd mode. I have noticed also that I have a bit of steering wheel wobble mainly when I brake hard. Wheel bearings seem to be alright. Si I have been told in may be the cv joints. If this is right how much am I expecting to pay for the bits and get them fitted my a garage?
Thanks.
Thanks.

You should only lift one wheel.
With both lifted the opposite wheel should spin backwards to the one you are turning.
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The panhard rods go from the chassis to the axle as in the photo.
The blue ones in the photo are adjustable panhard rods but fit in the same place as yours.
Panhard bushes
And a link to fitting king pins.
