The Disco is good value but it will come as a shock to the system after the economy of the A4.
The advantage of the disco of course is that you can work easily on them yourself and parts are readily available from specialists all over the country.
The one you've got in mind sounds like a good buy. Tidy 300tdi's can be upto 2.5k.
The one thing i like about the Disco is that it ages well. We are considering one next year for similiar reasons to you, it would stay stock except for tyres and be used for towing.

how about a jeep cherokee 2.8 diesel auto?
you'll should get a nice one for 5k say 2004-05 - if you get a limited then you usually get full leather trim as well - petrols are cheaper but mega thirsty
also can tow up to 3.5 tons with a diesel auto
avoid the 2.5 diesels as the engine isn't that reliable

I have been looking at Disco's recently to perhaps have one as my every day car and for laning as the size, both for passengers and load carrying is good, plus as has been said, I can work on it any get bits anywhere. It's just the fuel costs and the cost of a trailer for the Jimny and storage space for the trailer.
I run an old 1.3 Micra as my daily which does 2,000,000 mpg and a disco will do >30mpg on more expensive diesel. Then I get this overwhelming urge for a V8 and the idea gets silly.
If it's just a 4x4 to ferry the kids about in all year round, I agree with an older long wheelbase Vit. Petrol or Diesel, they are easy to work on, easy to get bits for and cheap to buy. Stick a set of at's on for all year round use and you're away.

We've got a Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD auto and its brilliant. We bought it new in 2004 and it still drives and looks like new. Touch wood it has been incredibly reliable too - not something all the Disco's can boast ( I had one for a short time!). The Jeep easily tows my Wrangler on a trailer backwards and forwards across France and I would buy another one if they hadn't stopped importing them.

25mpg! I struggled to get 20mpg out of mine! And it was a td5 D2.
If you are serious about getting one be aware that the rust like nothing else! The disco 1's rust on the body (boot floor) and rear of the chassis. The disco 2's rust on the whole chassis and are not rust proved anywhere near as good as the D1's.
My D2 had to have lots of welding carried out to the rear suspension area where the chassis had just rusted through.
Even tho they rust so much I still want another! This time I think I'll go for a defender!

Apparently there was a run of D2's with chassis problems it doesn't apply to every one. The story goes along the lines of bare chassis' left exposed to the elements before being assembled.
A mate of mine has one that they had to swap the chassis on as the original had cracked in a couple of places.
There are some well looked after examples but most will be seeing the onset of rot. If i do get one it will be getting a full rustbuster treatment.
