smoking Jimny was created by v8dougie
I have a 2000 Jimny with the G13BB engine, it has done 95k miles with full service history.

Starts and runs fine, pulls happy enough, and no probs at all, however it gives a puff of blue smoke when first started. It does not smoke at all when driving, even when bein pushed, so assume there must be a very minor leak which pools in a cylinder when not in use, any ideas what it could be? Very early signs of head gasket failure? Rocker cover gasket failure or worn piston rings?

Any help greatly received!

hiya, covered this a few months back in tech.

Came to the conclusion it is valve guide oil seals.

Mine has done 117,000 and does exactly the same, general opinion, just keep truckin'.

Short term cure ?? Just 'blip' the throttle as you turn the ignition off, works on mine, almost no smoke on re-start next morning.

All the best, Bry D.

I would say the same. Our old SJ burnt oil all the time and I had it rebuilt but wish I'd taken the advice of my mot tester and left it alone. It never effected the mot and I just topped the oil up every now and then. It's not an issue.

Thanks for the responses. Just found that thread, sorry for doubling up, did try the search button but not very well apparently!

Bry D - is yours still not smoking 8 months after using that oil stop leak stuff? Or has it started again?

I do not like the idea of starting the car and it puffing out blue smoke, but am loathed to disturb the head as there are no other head gasket problems as yet.

Cheers

You can probably change the seals with the head on, with a bit of ingenuity, but probably best not to bother until the oil consumption reaches 1000miles per litre.

Just don't look behind when you start it up

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Sorry to reactivate this oldish thread, but have noticed something unusual!

Could anyone explain why, when I park my Jimny pointing slightly down hill overnight, it does not smoke on start up. If I park uphill, then it is quite a sizeable cloud of blue smoke!

A logical explanation anywhere?!:(

It's most likely because it's only the seals on cylinder 3 or 4 that are leaking and it's almost impossible to change the seals with the head on because you have to compress the valve springs and remove them which you can't do with out holding the underside of the valve (the part inside the cylinder).

Very interesting...sounds plausible. I did think it would be tricky to do with the head on, so am planning on living with it until a later date. Just wandered whether it could have been something else as it only happens when parked up hill.

Cheers :)

Could be sticking piston rings but unlikely only sure way to tell is pull the head off (Not hard to do with a little know how) and do the valve stem oil seal. when the head us off put a about 100ml of oil in each cylinder an leave for about and hour if one has drop more than the others you know you have a ring problem as well but as I say very unlikely. P.s they will all drop in time an it is worth trying STP oil treatment it has worked for me in the past.
