It could be the headgasket still. The chemical test I take it was in the coolant. Sometimes it doesn't always show up on those test, I'm not sure why.
Otherwise it could be a leak and it's leaking onto something hot like the inlet manifold and evaporating as soon as it's leaked stopping you from finding it, I've had this before. It could be a leak on the inlet manifold for example.
Some leaks only leak when the engine is cold and as it heats and expands it closes the gap and stops leaking.
Did it start exactly the same time as you changing the rad? It could be a rad hose ever so slightly leaking. Did you use new clips of the Jubilee type or re-use the spring type clips on the rad hoses? You need new ones really and Jubilee Clips of the correct sixe ot they go oval and don't seal.
I would start it from cold and examine everywhere that has water in it from cold all the way up to operating temperature a few times over to try and find a leak.
Otherwise if it got hot for you, how many times did it get hot for the previous owner, especially when the water pump failed, as this could have warped the head leading to headgasket failure and it's just not bad enough yet to show up properly.
If you can't find it, it might be a case of just keep topping it up and using it until you find the cause - either the leak becomes apparent or the head gasket blows completely, whichever is the cause.
You could also try a compression test on each cylinder but if it's running OK I don;t know it would show anything yet. If all are high and even, it might suggest the head gasket is in good order though, as your chemical test is showing at the moment.
I've said alot now and don't know I've helped much but think I might have???

have you checked the carpets aren't wet? Could be a leaking heater matrix...

My thoughts as above, check for a wet carpet as it could be the heater matrix or if theres no sign of a leak its evaporating inside the engine. Would still investigate the headgasket further, you don't know how long the water pump was a problem before it could have been leaking a while. When you changed the rad it could be coincidental.
My old sj would boil up constantly and did it for nearly a month before the headgasket let go! It turned out the rad had a leak out of sight and was drying before you could find it.

Hi there, some years ago I use to drive a morris J4 van,Yes I know,a long time ago???? I had a leak no one could find but I did .after working with the man who clean out the drains he showed me what he used to track the pipes under ground, a dye ,he put it in the pipes ,ding'''''dong'''yes you guessed it !!.
I put red dye in to the rad,a fair bit,bit too much realy but the leak left a red sail trail streak back of the water pump, gasket was seeping, got cha....That is what I do now to find leaks on the out side of the
engine,if not it's the head gasket,I hope this helps,works for me,dye off Flee bay..........:woohoo:

Hi,Sounds like an internal leak ! Have you pressurised the system from cold ?
You see how the thermostat is operating, water pump operation etc,etc
Maybe something in-between the stages....
I had a similar problem & fitted a bottle of K-seal & never had a problem again...
You could buy them in some parts outlets or from us...AA !
I have used this stuff on various engine & it works wonders...!
You could also join the AA through me & I will send you a FREE bottle
