I'm looking forward to a week away soon and I'll probably go north again.  However next year I half fancy heading west, but I wouldn't know where to begin as I don't really know Wales in the slightest. So I'd welcome some ideas. It would need to be remote and isolated preferable on it's own road, mountains are good as are forests. What areas would I be likely to find such places so I can start looking for cottages?

I really like Wales. Although some bits can be quite busy at Peak times like during the summer holidays. But out of season it is generally quite peaceful.

Depends what you are after really.

I've been holidaying in North Wales all my life. There are some lovely beaches along the north coast and many still have that quaint old worldly feel. Anywhere from Colwyn Bay and westwards along the cost line. But might be a little too commercial?

Trearddur Bay on Anglesey is also very lovely for some seaside time. And far less shops than along the mainland coast. So feels more remote.

If you want mountains, then obviously you have all of Snowdonia. Lots of awesome things to see and do. From steam trains, to climbing mountains, waterfalls, tea rooms, slate mines etc.

Have stayed at Tyn-Y-Coed a few times, not bad as a pub B&B, fairly remote, but easy to get lots of places:

Snowdonia is beautiful and rugged.

If you head South into Mid Wales, you still have lots of hills and mountains, but less rugged than Snowdonia. Also it can be a bit less touristy. Have stayed a few times at nannerth.co.uk/

Just outside Rhayader. Nice and remote for the most part.

Lots of great green lanes around the Mid Wales area too, although there are lanes in North Wales too, but not so many in Snowdonia. Mid Wales is really the laning capital.

I'm not so familiar with south Wales in terms of Cardiff, although I have been there. But generally it is more busy and less rugged than other parts of Wales, although the Black Mountains and Brecons are nice too.

If you want really remote, the Pembrokeshire might be the answer. Very loverly countryside and coves and bays. But far less activities available than in Snowdonia due to be less tourist popular and less commercial.

Can probably give some more info/details depending on what and where you are interested.

Mainly I want to be as far away from humanity as possible. Usually I head to the far north of Scotland. Thing is I'm on call 24/7 for the farm and so for 1 week a year I like to be a good days drive away with no phone service, not that that always means I don't have messages if I ventured near civilisation. Basically halfway up a mountain where the only interference in my peace is the dog wanting a walk.
