My parents in law have just bought a land cruiser 5 door Prado (They live in Aus). It's an awesome machine! I'm very envious, the 3 door commercial version with a dog guard would be perfect for me and my messy spaniel.

This is a Prado everywhere else in the world. It's so smooth to drive everywhere for all it's a short wheel base. And being a commercial variant it has a simpler 4x4 system and no air suspension or in other words it rugged and reliable and not heavily computerised so more DIY friendly. It's main advantage though is being able to run on a high traction surface it low range without tightening the the transmission up. All the other things we looked at were unable to do that so would have needed a traffic spotter and momentum to get out of our drive with a trailer on the back which is no good.

That's very clever, how does it manage that? I'm assuming it's a clever automatic transmission of some kind?

Nope. It's a manual permanent 4x4 but the centre differential is a torsten with a manual lock button so for us it's up the drive a 90 degree onto the road and then straight line up the hills to a safe place to get back into high range. But if I have to stop for traffic with my back wheels still on the gravel the torsten will stop too much digging by allowing the front to pull me too. It's the next level up from an old defender with the lockable open centre differential which was capable of digging one back wheel in in the same circumstances.
