its the heat has gone to your head
most land rovers i see with the conventional snorkel have the "head" pointing sideways along the screen rather than straight ahead to avoid sucking rain in along with dirt and other nasties.
can see the logic, also hit a deep ford to hard the water could come up over the bonnet run up the screen and down your forward facing snorkel :ohmy:

i ran an open cone filter for a few yrs and never had any probs with water etc
this was torn in half by a tree one day :whistle:
i now run no filter at all just a rear facing inlet with a fine s/steel gauze
ps im scottish ... the filter was always wet :laugh:

My snorkel faces backwards, just seems safer than facing forwards, if you hit a ford or puddle that splashes over the roof it's almost a garuantee that water will find its way into your airbox. Although a minor amount I still don't want to risk it. I know others that have run them facing forwards for years with no problems.
As jonesy said, heads available on eBay for around the 20-30 quid mark I'm sure I've seen.

The Safari style heads are designed to work facing forwards, there are slots to allow the water to run out and down the outside of the snorkel although they recommend that its rotated when driven in heavy snow:

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI found this on Ebay which is the Grill only
