I agree with cambelt related diagnosis. Too much of a coincidence not to be. Either too tight our too slack. Maybe they forgot to tighten the adjuster nut or tensioner bolt.

Thanks again, I have had a look into the cam belt being too tight on youtube
this sounds very similar to mine.

sounds like the waterpump to me
last year we had the pump changed on the RAV
had two different pumps fitted and it still whirrred
then fitted a genuine OEM pump and it was sweet
good luck

He has taken his alternator/water pump belt off and its still there so must be cambelt or something internal.
