Thanks Martin. Seems I'll have to do a bit more thinking.

Hello,
I have a 2009 Auto. Can anyone here explain why in Low range the Auto changes only till the 3rd gear, and doesn't use the 4th?

I'm driving my Jimny through sanddunes and more speed in low would make much difference

Assuming you can't get going in 1st high, by the time you've built up to 3rd low, that is a tremendous amount of stress through drivetrain, perhaps its limited to protect itself from damage?

It goes in 1st high, but when climbing the dune in 3rd then 2nd high the engine begins to stall, and if I didn't reach the top by then I have to back up all the way down and start again.

Climbing the dunes needs more momentum than torque, and due to the Jimny's light weight it needs more speed than other to have that momentum.

When doing the same climbs driving my Pajero I don't have to start the climb that fast but its weight (plus torque of course) keeps pushing it forward.

May be I can try holding higher revs in high next time and see how it will go.
