Starter motor tech

I’m seeming to be getting through starter motors quicker than I would hope….

I’ve added in a relay, so now I get the stuck starter click with much vengeance.

I suspect it’s water and muck causing issues.

Has anyone seperated the bendix firing from the current being tripped in? Considering adding a remote solenoid. That should at least shock a stuck starter free if it is full of cack.

I can’t be the only one with a problem… thoughts welcome!

After a careful! Consideration and knowing I need the car to start this weekend… I’ve grabbed a new one from the autofactors.

It’s clearly not my day. New starter swapped in and it sparks up first turn.

Second turn. Click of doom.
Third turn dash lights dim.

We’ve got a relay on the starter signal.
The starter is literally connected to each side of the battery.

That makes me think it's either immensely bad luck or something somewhere is seized and making it difficult for the starter?

It sounds fine when it started, and it pushes about in gear. I guess the gti motor is higher compression… I’ll pull the plugs as a test tomorrow.

I’ve got a spare battery on charge to rule that out.

If the motor and battery are designed to suit the GTI engine then there should be no problems with at least turning the engine over. As you are obviously having problems I would suggest you investigate the suitability and condition of the wiring. Plastering battery posts with grease is useless if the surfaces of the posts and connections are covered with sulphates.

I think you are on to something here. I’m starting to wonder if the clutch is dragging or full of mud and dragging things back

Water and silt/mud get absolutely everywhere which is why I hate them, it's very possible some has got where it's going to cause problems.
