I am investigating how to install a power steering conversion on my 1991 Santana Samurai.
Seems Vitara or Jimny bits can be used.
Anyone on here done this conversion?
Any information appreciated. Thanks

I’ve been looking at this.
Seems a couple of options. Jimny box and vitara pump off the engine.
Jimny box and electric pump off a corsa or similar.
Vitara bix instead of the jimny but with custom mounting brackets to fit the Sami chassis. I think this only makes sense if you can’t get a jimny box.
SJ box and a cut and shut column with an electric assist from a Prius or a late Corsa.
I’m still thinking about it and in the short term just going for a drop pitman arm to see if that gets me the feel / leverage I want.

The Jimny Steering box pitman arm has no drop in it.
I think you will need a drop if your sammy is lifted, but might be ok if not.
With a non lifted Samurai or up to 2" lift, and the original samurai box, there should not be any need for a more than original samurai dropped arm, the original will do fine.
there are youtube films on the electric option, looks not so hard to do.
Much easier than the Vitara wich will need frame welding inserts to fit. Brackets bend or is very large.
Jimny box is bolt on except maybe for the drop pitman arm if there is any lift.
Will the Baleno or similar pump for a steering rack deliver enough fluids for the steering box?

I wouldn't expect a dropped pitman arm to provide any noticeable increase in leverage, there might be some reduction in bump steer if the vehicle is lifted.

Hey Fordem,
Thats right my my SJ has about a 2.5” lift on it. In the first events I did it was feeling less deft and precise than the jimny I used previously.
The jimny is of course a different vehicle, but I felt I was losing out on lock and the rate of getting the lock in.
The drag link seems to be substantial not parallel to the steering link and the Drop Arm will get them parallel again. It might be placebo but we’ll see what happens. Should be a quick install once the old one gives up its hold on the splines!

I would try a Z bar to see if it feels any better
before messing with drop pitman arm

Drop pitman arms can be really difficult to remove
also lowering angle pitman arms are not cheap
So i say cut drag link and weld in a thick plate making a z formation
just to see if it warrants spending on a lower angle drop pitman

Ok I get you. I’ve got a drop arm here. I’ll see if the original will pull or not. It seems to be FT

A "Z-bar" will not have the same effect as a drop pitman arm - the pivot points remain unchanged, all it will do for you is allow the drag link to not foul on the leaf spring (if that is a problem).
