Old mans vitara 8v

I think my dad got suzuki envy, he had a go in the jimny then mysteriously a week later he told me we were going to pick this up.



It used to belong to my cousin, who now has a jimny (sensible lad) and my old man pestered him until he gave in and sold it our way.
It's an 1.6 8v and already has a few tasty little bits on.
It has a battery terminal conversion and a big battery fitted, relocated to the other side of the bay. Two transit interior lights (stupidly bright, you will never have trouble reading a map again in here ) hard top with panel sides, electric fan, electric fuel pump, bull bar with spots, tow bar, 1 3/4 inch us carb conversion (taken from a metro turbo)

Unfortunately my cousin removed the tyres to fit to his jimny, but he chucked in a set of gv springs and spacers are to be ordered soon for a 1.5inch lift, were also after some 235/75/15 mt's and she should be ready to go

Also the heaters weren't working, we replaced the thermostat, gave it a coolant change, and wired up a decent earth to the temp sensor. Gauge reads lovely and heaters are cooking now.

The vit is going into my dads mate garage who's a bit of a su carb guru for a decent tune and potentially a rejet as it's running very rich.

Get a GV front diff casing on it and a stubby shaft mod made and it will save loads of hassle if taking it off road . Great fun motors.

Looks tidy if these had a live front axle id of had one just a nice size.

We fitted a 1.5" lift this evening, grand vitara springs and bits for vits spacers (very nice they are too). A decent difference for what it owes. We also put my all terrains with the std jimny wheels on it for the time being.

Still a list of bits to do, spots to wire up, fuel pump switch, carb tune, bit of tidying up wiring under the bonnet.

We got the lift on the vitara, stuck my a/t's on it, wired up the fuel pump properly and gave the plugs a clean up.
But when we took it in for a tune up, it seems the carb has done more damage than good.

He confirmed that it was running extremely rich, however after setting it up it absolutely gutless.

He did what he could but has warned us there is a good chance that as it was ran so rich for so long it has probably washed the bores.

We need to compression test it so does anyone know what figures should be expecting on the 8v lump, or has anyone carried out a test before on one and can share what they found.

Depending on what we find sourcing an engine might be our next job

It should measure around 170psi on each cylinder, all plugs out, warmed up and throttle wide open.

Way superior to the Jimny. Pity they didn't make it in under 1500cc to beat the road rent. I'm looking for an auto vintage one right now.

A friend of mine has a modded commercial vit. It's a right tank! Goes anywhere.

Had my eyes on this but it seems he wants a bot too much in reserve.

It's hard to find a solid one these days especially at a decent price. We're lucky as dads one never really got taken off road so the tin work hasn't set in too bad.
