That is the faux leather (we called it vinyl in The Olden Days, Mercedes call it MB-Tex now to poshify it, honestly fabric is miles better)  it cracks very quickly where it flexes as you slide in & out and compress the outside edge. My 2001 gen 3 had nearer 130,000 miles and the fabric was just starting to wear thin, also there was a a lot of foam dust on the carpet underneath, but it was still perfectly presentable.

I suspect that the nearest my Gen 4's "leather" steering wheel has ever been to a cow is when I put the beefburgers in the back at Tesco.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
