I think my gearbox is broken was created by pgatensuk
Driving home tonight (in my 2005 soft top 47,000 mile manual VVT Jimny), I became aware of a noise that got louder and more clunky as I got into town and changed gear and slowed. Pulling away would generate a loud clunk, unless the clutch was very gently released.
Managed to get home, jacked up the rear end and placed on axle stands, climbed underneath with engine running and in gear. noise is coming from gearbox. Thought at first the clutch might have gone, but taking it for another drive engaging gear was not always working and noise was even louder and can feel the clunk through the steering wheel.
I'm pretty sure it isn't Prop UJs or transfer box or rear diff/axle. Pretty sure it is gearbox (loud whining noise)and maybe also the clutch.
So looking for advise on what is the best corrective action and what it will likely to cost me? I must add that I am expecting the worst and already picked up a cheap car (2002 Ford Puma) to take the pressure of having to fix jimmy this weekend (Thanks to my mate Doug).
Do I purchase a gearbox on ebay? Seems to be a big difference on m13 gearbox prices. £225 to £900! (are all M13a the same?)
Or
Drop the box and get it rebuilt?
Appreciate any help advice.
Cheers for now.

I'd check the rear 'engine' mount (gearbox) first Paul... mine delaminated and juddered (or 'fluttered' I think described it betterer) when setting off / under load offroad -
New one from the BigJimny store sorted it...!
