TYRE CHOICE? BF Goodrich vs Yokohama

Hi Guys,

Im a newbie to the forum so go easy on me

I have just purchased a +40mm Old Man Emu lift kit for my 2003 'Auto' Jimny and a set of 15 x 7 wheels.

What size A/T tyre works best with this size of rim and doesnt rub on the Jimny's arches?

I want the car to be a 50/50 on road/off road vehicle.

Also which one would you choose between these two A/T tyres?

Yokos or BF's ?

My personal experiance of Yokohama is that they wear quickley
the tread isn't very hard wearing!!
Bf's are the stuff of legend's, I had a set on my old ford ranger and got
42'000 miles out of them, they were the at's!! Rely good as an all
rounder but they struggle once it starts getting a bit muddy!!

Also don't forget with bf's being around £100 a corner if you rip the
sidewalk out it's gonna get expensive, that said I abused my at's to
death and they shrugged everything off I threw at them!!!!

I'm running remoulds at the moment but am going back to bf's once
they are done cos they are the best as an all rounder!!!!

Ohhh yeah tyre size, you would be best with something around
215-75-15. Or 215-80-15

Never ran Yoko's on an offroader, but on a sports car, ive seen a set of yoko's wear out in lkess than 4000 miles.
However, they are super sticky and grippy.

I'd say BFG ATs are the dogs.

When I ran them on my trooper I got 60,000 road miles out of a set of them before any needed changing

As soon as the Jimny ones wear out thats what wil be going on there too

Thanks guys for the replies. I guess its the old saying 'you get what you pay for'. It was only my own personal experiance with Yok's on sports cars that drew me to the brand. However on many of the Jap Jimny sites they seem to favour the Yok's too.

The Yokohama's are only available in 215/80/15 profiles and the BF A/T's in 215/75/15.

I guess both should fit under the arches of my +40mm lifted Jimny with no rubbing? I dont want to start hacking the arches etc.

Also how much would the speedo be put out on the above 2 brands?

we run 215x80x15's and have a 2" suspension lift. No modification to our front arches was necessary, but the rears had to be tidy'd up a little at the lower edge (20mm shaves off the bottom using a stanley knife).

Speedy is maybe 12 - 15% out and we have issues with long runs in 5th gear as the car really has to labour.

off road, the 80 profile gives us even more clearance under the diffs, to the point where now our friends in their disco ground out before we do !!

While I think about it, we have Broncho Diamond backs & they have 19mm treadblocks. these give us extra height too.. so I think you have to take into account the style of tread pattern too (Mud versus AT's)

As a rule, and again, this is personal preference, the 215x80x15 with the Diamond Backs is the largest tyre We can fit on our Jimny without cutting the leading edges or modifying the bumpers to a great extent.

Ive been having a good look around for tyres and come across these HANKOOK RT03 which also come in a handy 215/75/15 size.

They are MT's but from what I've read they ride well on the road.

Anyone else using them here?

I've got the BF Goodridge AT's on my Jimny at the moment... These have done me VERY well for the last two years including a prang where some twit girl did a u turn into me and managed to hit me in the rear left wheel, only managing to pierce the tire 'just', hence the three ply side walls which make them super reliable when out playing... I have also had a chip board screw about 40mm through the tire and managed to unscrew it with no pressure lost after about a year...

On road their pretty good, great grip and low noise. Mine are the 70's and they dont rub even on my mud flap brackets, about 20mm gap at lock...

The speedo, gained 4km/ph which now brings in line my speed (Jimny) with my Navman and GPS when matching them up... As the jimny is undersped with the OEM tires by about 5km/ph.

I can personally say that these are great tires and you should get these, as they will be a long term investment for both security and when out playing!!!

At about $1200 (AUD) for 5 tires including 'finger plate ballancing' which is a must! These have been the sole greatest purchase for my jimny so far!!!

Had the Hankook's on my old Jimny,performed well off road but ran very nicely on the road as well.
