Heres another cheap hack I did to carry extra fuel on my roof racks. 

I took a peice of 18mm ply and wrapped it in a 'shag pile' rubber door mat.  This is to grip the fuel cans and also grip the roof racks without damaging their finish. 

I added rubber feet to this base to lock it into the spaces between the rack bars. 

Bought two 10lt long fuel cans for ~$15 each. 

Then I used tie down straps to hold the cans to the base, and the base to the racks. Works very well. 

PS. I use this for light 4WDing, and I'm not sure this would stand up to very rough tracks. Would need a collar around the base of cans.
