It Had to Happen

.....somewhere in Japan. Portal axles for the Jimny. I always wonder how much true engineering goes into projects like this. I think I remember seeing someone come up with portal axles before but never saw anything commercial come from it. The information was in Japanese so I'm not sure if this is a backyard blacksmith job or a production effort.

That's cool. I have long wondered why its not a more common thing.

The price must be horrendous. Unless they are chain drive they need an idler gear, or the axle has to run backwards.

I wish I'd just bought a Unimog when I could have had my pick of surplus ones for £3000, or even a 101 when £1500 would have bought a good one...

Chains are for anchors.

They don't look like anything I've seen. Not keen on that bracket. Kind of detracts from the clearance.

I think the early Unimog 404 & 411 are too heavy and the pinion is too long.
I have to collect my shortened ones this weekend. Gonna need an engine hoist.
The later U1300 are modular in 5 pieces and with a much shorter pinion but are even heavier
G wagon ? But what price ? Then again how much for a decent 4" lift. Take that away from the G wagon axle & add on fabrication.

There's a chain in the Jimny transfer box, unless you now have a Rocklobster.
