Hello Folks,

I Recently got a slight rattle coming from my rear exhaust box, on inspection I found what I thought was the outer skin completely rusted away from the edges and moving around freely, when I had a closer look it turned out to be a heat shield rusted away and floating about, which I have now removed. I assume this heat shield is designed to stop the wiring down in the rear bumper and the rear bumper itself from melting.

Has anyone got any experience of these heat shields, are they vital, I am planing to weld a new one up when I have some time but in the meantime do you think there is any danger of me melting the arse end of my car?

PS I have no idea why this text is in red.

my old backbox was rusted out, and so I just took it off til I fabbed a bit of straight pipe to replace it :P
never had any problems while it was rusted out, had it like that for a good couple of months, albeit small short journeys though, and never had any problems :)

I replaced the box recently on my daughters car and it came without the shield. There was enough of the old shield left to transfer over but I doubt it makes a iota of difference!
