Grand Vitara with the M16 Engine? was created by zukebob
I'm hoping one of the Grand Vitara lovers/experts here can answer this question. There was supposed to be an M16 powered Grand Vitara in the 2006 - 2007 model range. I'm looking for the older longitudinally mounted M16 (not the new front wheel drive M16 Grand Vitaras). If I understand correctly, it was a short wheel base (3 door) version and had an option of the 03-72LE 4 speed automatic. Does anyone know the specific year/model of this variant, as well as the market area it was sold? I know there was no such thing in the U.S. but I'm not sure about the UK, Europe, Australia or Asia.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks MadsV. The new model (2015+) Grand Vitara with M16 are available in numerous markets and are soon to be here in the Philippines. The problem for me is that they have a transversely mounted engine and are front wheel drive. What I am really looking for is a market area that would possibly have a used 30-72LE (AW4) transmission with bell housing designed to mate with an M series engine. The first mention of the Vitara model with M16 and the 03-72LE came from people in Australia. I still can't find any specific information from Australian sources but have hoped their availability was relatively widespread.
Yakuza: Looks like I'm getting a little closer. Either the auto version wasn't available in Norway or simply none are currently for sale. I will keep probing used vehicle sources there or see if I can find online adds for auto dismantling in the region.
Thanks to both of you for the replies.

A quick glance at parkers.co.uk suggest that it wasn't an option in the UK

Other norwegian site but same cars: www.finndel.no
couldn't find any in the biggest Norwegian data base for used car parts....
try also sweden: no.bildelsbasen.se/

Two engines from cars with 5sp man so none with auto.
The bellhousing is the same on M13 and M16 but most likely the auto transmission you look for is another type designed for M16 and not M13?

I believe that the AW4 for the M16 should bolt straight onto an M13 engine. That potential is at the heart of my search. I'm not sure what mods to the tunnel would be necessary (along with countless other items) but, preferring automatics for off-road, the modification would provide a much stronger transmission. I don't exactly baby my Jimny but I try to be somewhat conservative. The fact that the maximum input torque for the current TW-40E transmission just barely exceeds the maximum output torque of the M13 has always concerned me.......and stopped me from considering an engine upgrade
11/60: Thanks for the information. I will drop the searches for used transmissions in the UK.

For anyone that is interested in this topic (and for whatever reason) I thought I should provide an update.
I have found that between September 2005 and July 2008, the New Grand Vitara was produced with a longitudinally mounted M16 but, in all markets, was only available with a manual transmission. During that period, the 03-72LE was only available behind the J20A engine.
