Bought a Jimny last weekend, always admired the jimny from when the latest incarnation was released and it embarassed alot of expensive 'jeeps' in off road tests on TV. So I sold my mint 1994 Mazda Eunos Roadster and decided to go for something less heavy on insurance & tax. Bought a 2001 Jimny, it looks pretty clean & drives straight. When I flipped the rear eats i saw substantial (about the size of my palm) section of rust around what appears to be a drainage hole? I live in the republic, where we dont use salt on the roads but unfortunately this jimny is a Northern Irish import (where they do salt the roads) so the salt has gotten to it I reckon.
I'll properly investigate this weekend but for now im curious, I know its no speedster or going to win any handling competitions but my first port of call is to fit wheel spacers, then i was thinking lift kit but will this negatively impact its road manners as this is my only car for road and fun? I expect the wheel spacer will improve its road manners by giving it a wider footprint and so less twitchy on motorway?
Anyway, looking forward to getting stuck in with a wire brush and power drill and from reading what i have on here already, i'll be seeing alot of my drill & wire brush!
oh and can anyone recommend somewhere online that sells a light bar that attaches to the grill or around there so i can fit my spotties? cheers
pulled out the rear seats, there's substantial rust and a hole near the belt mounting points in the floor so i thought it unsafe for anyone to really sit in the back should there be an impact. Also, I need to haul mountain bikes and gear so for practicality sake too the seats came out.
While waiting for the hammerite to dry though i did something really stupid, I was totally unaware that the jimny has an imobiliser, the only key i was given when i bought it was broken so couldnt go on a ring etc. So in my naiveity i drilled a hole through the key body to pass some parachord for an interim fix until i got a new one cut. Sure didnt i drill straight through when i then discovered was the transponder, €200 and an entire day waiting on the engineer to come out i still cant drive it as the programming comuter they had with them packed it in in my drive way. Back to the drawing board... to think i bought a jimny to SAVE money vs my old MX5.. ho hum...
