My Jimny (Ginny)

Got my 99 Jimny and to stop it being called Jim I have named her Ginny, very exciting times.

Drove it Auckland to Wellington ~600km's yesterday afternoon. It drove very well on the way down but at times the steering was vague and when there was a reasonable cross wind 50kph + on a bumpy road it was twitchy. Would one of these Return to Centre Steering Damper help? I know that being a light vehicle it will be wind effected but the bumps on the road were quite disconcerting for my partner.

The interior is a bit rough with rips in the front seats and drivers' side carpet but nothing some decent seat covers and mats will not fix. It seems mechanically good with no oil or water usage on the drive. It is also nice that with long climbs the temperature gauge does not creep.

No real modifications planned at the moment, will wait and see how it behaves and goes. But will have some tyres by Christmas.

Thanks, i didn't like the headunit that was installed so last night took it out to find that the person that had installed it, cut the loom and chocolate blocked it together. After some swearing and cable tracing was finally able to get mine installed.

Also driving home tonight will be fun with 60k winds gusting to 140kph

overtaking lorrys in the wind is always an exciting experiance!

they are generally abit skittish as their short narrow and high.

that steering dampner kit looks all abit mental and pricy have you looked on offroad armory or the shop on here.

Haha, yea it wasn't to bad, was a head wind which helped and traffic was slow.

Yea I knew buying it they are a bit skittish but I want to at least try and improve it.

I have had a look at offroad armory but I think buy the time I convert it to NZD, pay for shipping and wait for the delivery it will be up there in price. This one is from the same people but looks maybe better for the price Steering Damper .

Got my public band uhf radio antenna installed last night, I am happy with the outcome on this vehicle. Looks a lot more professional than the install job I did on the Terrano.

Still deciding where to put the head and mic in the vehicle. Thinking the head under the ash try and the mic to go under the little pocket to the left of the steering wheel.

What have other people done? The pervious owner had theirs in the ash try position but personally i would rather have that tray for coins etc.

I also want to install a CB, looks good to me, you did find the right spot for it.
I have a Jimny Cabrio so i can't fix it above the rearviewing mirror to the sealing.

Its tucked out the way and the passenger can operate it.my aerial is mounted on the back door on a custom bracket I made, not the best place for range but I only use it laning in a group.

I have mounted my little UHF radio and after some thinking about it I have ended up putting it under the ash tray and run the mic and speaker to the right. The performance of the little 1/4 wave whip is great no noticeable decrease in performance off the repeater in Wellington, in fact it maybe even better than with the 3/8th's phased with the 5/8th's antenna. No the speaker does not hit my knee in normal driving, only time will tell if it does off road tho.



Having the larger radio mounted under the glove box looks like a good place.

My 4WD kit, first aid kit and tool box fits perfectly in the back.



Fitted some new rubber mats, just got to find an ash try to put in for my coins.

Also one of the old owners had a dog and spent 2 hours trying to vacuum it all out. Definitely going to have to fit better seat covers and a dog box for when I get a dog.

Looking good buddy its coming together well.
