Gatescarth Pass and the Lakes Tour 2010

We've just got back from doing Gatescarth Pass a Greenlaning Tour of the Lake District a bit of Yorkshire and some of the Peaks on the way and the way back, including Rough Clough (up the steps not down) and Chapel Gate (down as that was tough enough).

I used every bit of protection fitted - diff guard, cage, rock sliders and bent a TBR transfer box skid pan so it looked like a banana!

These are the first pictures I've shown on here of my Jimny in it's current Evolution - with the cage, bumpers and winch.

I could have done with a Rocklobster really but got by. I used the winch once on Gatescarth Pass rather than slip the clutch and kill it. A Rocklobster is on order!!!

Trouble opening the doors??? No, No, No, our club's fabricator and welding guru Grant is far too good for that. He spent alot of time on my cage and considered many things when deciding how to make it and make it good.

The bends that are in one piece of tube are equal on both sides and it is nice and close to the body and protects it in the right places. It is also in parts and bolted together with one part of the bracket welded to each joining part, so if I damage it I can get a new bit made up unbolting the old one and bolting in the new! I don't plan to damage it though!!!

I had to have a compromise on the screen bar though. Too high and it would be in my view, too low and the bonnet would not open. I made the decision for it to be bolt on and low down. I therefore have to remove it to open the bonnet but it is needed to brace the 2 sides of the cage. I see others don;t have it and probably gte away with it but I did not want to leave anything to chance!

The cross-window brace on mine has caused some consternation at MOT time.

One examiner failed it on the window obstruction "rule". I believed this to be rubbish as the rule clearly states that it applies to items fixed to the window and does not apply to items forward of the window. I took it to another MOT place who were happy with it although they still insisted putting an "advisory" on the form regarding the bar. Therefore having a bolt on solution will stop any discussion.

I can't remember everywhere we went to be honest Jonplace as our friend Claire was the navigator and organisor and my Mrs shared the map reading and I know she won't know where we went!

I think I read your comments on here about the cage screen bar Martin. It was those comments that got me thinking about what I wanted before I made my requests. I only really have the bar on when I know I'm going off road, but as I tend not to use the car much now that's most of the times I take it out! You don't tend to want to leave a vehicle as conspicuous as mine in Tesco's car park with £550 of winch and £200 of synthetic rope on the front that only needs a 17mm spanner and a wire cutter to remove.

The Lake District is a lovely area with some fantastic Lanes, as is Derbyshire and the Peaks!!! We've been there for the last two years and this year on laning holidays though so will not go back for a while or it will lose it's appeal.

Just interested, as the external cage on mine was made by Safety Devices and they must have put strength as a priority over door opening. Must be nice to have a friend who can build it made to measure for you. The removeable screen bar is a good idea as mine resticts the bonnet opening but then it only takes a couple of mins to take the bolts out of the hinges and lft the bonnet off

It's nice to know that even Safety Devices had the same problems that we did also then and could not necessarily find solutions to them!

It is useful having a friend who can make bespoke items for you. He made my front bumper to measure as it appeared that many off the shelf bumpers do not allow for the fact that winches with a brake outside the drum - ie: a cone brake on the end, are longer. They therefore don't fit.

He was going to fabricate a rear bumper also but time is valuable to him and I could see that my wants and wishes were perhaps becoming a little demanding. Also, for him to fabricate something like the ORA rear bumper I have would take a lot of time and therefore money and would probably equal theirs in price. I therefore saved him the bother and bought their off the shelf HD Rear bumper. It does it's job as a rear bumper but it could never be used as a rear winch bumper or have a fairlead in it.

I would have probably got a much better quality rear bumper if my friend had fabricated it though but as I say, time was the issue. I can see that once you've fabricated it and can laser cut all the parts to a bumper like my ORA one and the design is out of the way, making them up is not too much of an issue.

You could take your front bar off and get someone to fabricate brackets for you. Half the braket will need to be welded to the cage and the other to the screen bar, so when bolted together they are almost as good as asingle welded item like you have now.

ORA home made copy

Lights moved up so no cut outs required giving a clean finish on bumper.
As it is mounted deep inside the chassis legs mine can and has been winched off/ towed and bungee on many occasions
