Car won't start when I turn the key

My 3rd gen 1.3 Jimny won't start when I turn the key, I turn it two steps, the dash lights turn on, but when I turn it to start the engine, it doesn't do anything.
There's a current draw, because the lights dim, but no starter action. What could it be? The mechanic told me they couldn't get it to do that last time it happened and took it to get checked

Possibly a bad starter, a bad starter solenoid, a loose or broken cable between the battery & the starter.

The starter solenoid serves two purposes, one is to engage the starter bendix with the ring gear on the flywheel (or flexplate, if it's an automatic) and the second is to close a high amperage switch that connects the starter to the battery.

The solenoid could be engaging the bendix (which could be the current draw you're seeing), but if the switch section doesn't work, the starter won't crank the engine, may be the switch does work, but the starter doesn't because of worn brushes or something else, or even the switch section is good and the starter is good, but there's no battery power to the switch, the starter won't crank the engine.

There's also a remote possibility that the engine is frozen.

You are not getting any lights flashing on the instrument cluster for instance a yellow padlock symbol? That would indicate a fault with the immobiliser.

I'm yet to see a Suzuki where the OEM immobilizer will prevent it from cranking, Suzuki usually inhibits injection & ignition when the immobilizer is triggered - I know the Gen4 immobilizer works this way, but I have no experience with the Gen3.

Just had a similar issue after I changed my starter (thought I had bought a duff one). The solenoid wire wasn't getting power, must have knocked something during the change. Ran a fresh wire from the fuse board and all sorted

As already mentioned, most likely a stuck solenoid. If it’s a stuck engine try putting turning the crank pulley or put it in gear and rock it, without the ignition on.

Another possibility is a dead battery or as me101 says a bad connection.

How much do the lights dim and do you hear a series of clicks when trying to start?
