Steering wanders over 40mph was created by ShepsJimny
Hi, I have a 1998 Suzuki Jimny Ive replace the kingpins, Front wheel bearings, track rod ends, and the tyres are balanced. When I go over 40 mph it still seems to wander on the steering just wondered would this be a steering box issue or something more sinister don’t want to scrap the car any help, pleaseThanks, Shep

Could be interesting to know what size wheels and tyres you have.
And if your car has any mods.
Especially wider rims and or tyres can make it a bit less precise. Worn tyres too.
But the steering box can get some play in it when worn as you say. With the engine off standing still you should not be able to turn the steering wheel more than 1-2cm side to side (half an inch) without the wheels turning.
Some might think this is much and might be out of standard but that is how much play is in mine and still kind of does its job and my car is stable and straight.
I am waiting and hoping someone comes up with a kit to overhaul the steering boxes. While waiting I carefully adjust the clearence to as little as i can with the nut and screw on the top of it. Mostly worn in the middle so I cannot remove all the play to make sure it doesn't lock up at full end.
Also weak shocks and other items or wear like the radius arm bushings, steering links...

Hi thanks for your help so far, my Jimny was stood for 4 years the tyres and wheels are standard. Ive tried tightening the steering box to the point where it is stiff on the steering wheel, and it seems to wander across the road on its own which increases the faster you go. Can start to notice it about 30 mph I wonder if it is the steering box needs replacing any ideas.
Thanks Sheps
