Hi all,
I have an M16A Non-VVT engine which I plan on putting in to my 2001 Non-VVT Jimny which currently just has the standard M13A engine.
Whilst i have the engine out I thought it might be a good idea to replace some of the bits that might usually be hard to access (such as belts etc).
I also thought it might be worthwhile changing the head gasket. I notice the M13A Non VVT head gasket kit is available on the big jimny shop, however i wondered if anyone knew if it was the same on both engines - i.e. will this kit fit the M16A?
I am looking at doing this in spring when it has warmed up a bit outside so am currently pulling together a bit of a stock of things to swap over. If anyone has any suggestions of things that I should look to change that would be appreciated.
I wouldnt exactly describe the current engine as a 'smooth runner' (it regularly cuts out when cold!) so its safe to assume that if something might need swapping then i will probably look to replace it!
Cheers
Chad

Hi,
Whilst its best to double check, some of my references show this as compatible with the 1.6 engine. However some references dont list it against the 1.6.

If it is OK and there is no signs of overheating or leakage I would not touch it if it where low milage.
But the Iridium spark plugs, top cover seal, lip seals for the crank fwd and aft, and camshaft seals, intake (?) and exhaust manifold seal, I might do if it where mine. Maybe the oil and water pump and seals if the engine got many miles on it or have been left standing still for a long time.
I did nothing at all to my m16 engine when swapping but it had low milage, was just serviced and was out of the Liana for two months before it was put in my jimny.

Good idea! The 2 M16a swaps I've done have both ended up needing head gaskets a year or two later (old engines of unknown mileage so not unexpected)
Yes it's the same gasket. The cylinder head is the same. The last one I did I pulled the 1.3 head off the old engine, got that skimmed then fitted it to the 1.6 block.

Cracking stuff - thanks all!
Am I best off re-using the 1.3 head do you think or just stick with the 1.6 head that is with the engine? Would there be any benefit to using the 1.3?
I also presume that the belts are common between the two engines?!

When you swap the engines you will use all the m13 auxhiliarys so the belts to use are the m13 ones.

As Busta said they are the same (as far as we know) so if you do the head gasket I would use the head with the least milage if there is any significant difference in that.Cracking stuff - thanks all!
