Air Con/Power Steering belt JB43 question was created by Big Nick
Hi everyone,
I have a big issue with the air con/power steering belt slipping - particularly in the evenings with temperature changes. I was wondering what other owners of the JB43 do for their power steering belts, because I have heard that its a bit of a common problem. For some reason the other belt doesn't seem to give any issues, but it does seem tighter.
I use the specified 4PK950 belt, and tried but couldn't fit a 4PK930, so I might try the 940.
Does anyone have any tricks that keep theirs quiet? Or is it just me with the issue? Or do people commonly run smaller than specified belts? Perhaps it is the brand I have used, but it was sent by Suzistore, Australia's Jimny specialists, so they'd know more than me.
Thanks for any info you may have
Nick

Reasons for a slipping belt are usually not tight enough, not a proper fit or serious resistance in the bearings of what the belt is driving. The latter would quickly overheat the belt and it would fail ie lots of smoke and then fire. The belt should fit into the sides of the pulley without touching the bottom. Belt tightness will depend on a number of factors so stick to recommendations.

A common issue on these is a failing Crankshaft pulley. It sounds like the belt but in fact the pulley has a rubber damping insert which is failing. Look at the pulley with a torch and you can often see it wobble.
Change it before it fails completely.

Belt length isn't critical, as long as it fits on and you can get it tight within the movement range of the tensioner. Are you using the 10mm hex hole in the tensioner to get it tight?

I had someone look at it, but they said the pulley was it. It was the belt.
So I've changed the belt over, started the car and the belt was too loose, so didn't turn and I lost power steering. I've since pulled it all apart to get maximum tension, put it back together and it all spins now, and it is tight but power steering hasn't come back and the engine light is on... Not sure what I've done.
Does the power steering shut down until the engine light is cleared? It's a 2001 so has the obd 1.
Or have I done something? The belt is back on as it should be, all the right pulleys.

Sounds strange
does the steering pump pulley rotate when running
I would lift front wheels off the ground start engine
remove ps reservoir cap then turn steering wheel full lock reft to right a couple of times
to see if this helps it wake up
eml if you used a pry bar on alternator you could have caught the sensor for crank (M series engine)
or caught nok sensor wire goes round back of power steering pump to the block
