How To Wire Light Bar To Main Beam

Hey!

I've just bought a light bar to put on my 2013 Jimny.

I want to wire it up so that I can toggle the light bar on and off, but it will only turn on with my main beam.

The light bar I bought comes with a harness and I've put together a quick diagram.

Which wire do I need to splice into to link with my main beam please?

I am not sure you wiring diagram is quite correct around the switch, it looks like it has battery positive and negative connected? If you only want the light bar to come on with main beam then the switch needs to be connected to main beam, not the feeds from the battery.

The Jimny headlamps are negative switched (most are positive switched, so the diagrams need a little modification), so come out of the negative on the coil of the relay, in to the switch and then in to the headlamp switched side. The positive side of the relay coil is connected to +12V.

So Pin 86 goes to battery +!2v;
Pin 85 goes to the switch and then to the headlamp switch side
Pin 30 goes to battery +12v
Pin 87 goes to the light bar +
The Light bar negative goes back to ground.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the help!

Yeah, there is a positive & negative wire to the switch - it has a light in the switch so I assumed it was for powering that?

Would this diagram be accurate now?

The light in the switch might be a problem, is it an LED or ordinary filament bulb?

As I understand it Pins 85 and 86 are the relay coil with 86 the positive and 85 the negative. If that is correct then Pin 86 has to go to positive and Pin 85 goes through your switch to headlamp [switched] negative.

Pin 30 is the relay contact common and Pin 87 is the relay contact N/O (Normally Open).

You therefore need to connect pin 86 to battery positive and take the light bar back to battery negative.

As for the switch do you have detyails of the switch, pins/function and is it LED?

Without the switch lamp probably something like this

I believe the switch is LED, but unfortunately, there are no markings as to what each input on the switch is for. I believe it is the switch in this image.

Also, the wiring harness came pre-wired with the light bar with negatives going to 86.

Just written you a reply which I managed to delete by mistake. Sorry no way of making a new drawing this morning.

Pin 86 on a relay is usually positive, below is a dog example

images.app.goo.gl/CdFMKtifzerUUZ2X7

Suzuki use negative switched headlamps nearly everyone else is positive switched. You can still make this work, move the switch from between pin 85 and headlamps to the other side between battery positive (switch pin 1) and pin 86 (switch pin 2).

Provided the light bar doesn’t have the negative connected to the frame, negative switch the light bar by connecting light bar positive to battery positive (through the fuse) and take light bar negative to relay pin 30.

Connect relay pin 87 to negative/ground.

To make the switch LED work connect switch pin 3 to relay pin 30.

The relay coil now makes its circuit through the switch, then relay coil and headlamp switch.

The light bar makes its circuit from positive, through light bar and relay contacts to ground.

The switch LED makes its circuit through switch and then relay contacts.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Robin. I think I follow - does this diagram look correct?

Provided the switch is of the type you found, that looks correct to me.

You could wire it up in phases, miss out the switch LED pin 3 first and/or test without the light bar, just to make sure there is no short circuit.

Unless you have a multimeter to check everything is correct before putting the fuse in.

Just noticed one small point, the headlamp common is connected to battery +12V, not earth as shown in you drawing. The filaments (individual terminals for each beam) are then switched to ground.

Your drawing suggests that ground is battery positive ( top right hand corner) which is not correct. Jimnys like nearly all other vehicles are negative ground (chassis), the difference is that for headlamps the switch is in the negative line, not the positive as is more common on other vehicles.

Thanks Robin, that makes sense. I'll make sure to test everything with my multimeter as well!

One last question, with the wire in relay pin 85 - I'm needing to splice that into the main beam wire coming out of the h4 connector?
