OME on Jimny, what's the point?

I've got OME shocks installed with stock springs and you get about 70mm more travel at full articulation than with the stock shocks (I only measured at the rear). I fitted extended brake lines due to this, as I didn't fancy taking the chance that the stock lines would be long enough, they seemed to be getting v tight to me.

This is probably the closest picture I have to yours with the 4th Gen.

Flex is ok, but it does pick wheels up off the ground a bit too often IMO.

You can see here the rear wheel isn't really touching.

Standard suspension uses a bump stop to limit compression. This limit is not the limit of the shock, because if it was, the shock would soon be destroyed as the loading under sudden sharp compression such as dropping into a hole on a tight bend. This would exceed the strength of the shock mounting. Conversely, sudden droop would be controlled by the shock and ultimately by the suspension mounts binding. If you want to see how this happens, jack up the car as if in a cross axle situation and look at the mountings, specifically the arms where they are mounted to the chassis but also where the arms mount to the axle. Land Rover mounted their arms to chassis using a fixture that allows a rotating movement that obviates the problem with the mounts fitted on Japanese 4x4's. Manufacturers will err on the side of caution in designing suspension systems, but after market suppliers will push closer to the limits.

As that picture was taken there was still enough ground pressure to clear the obstacle in 2wd low so there was probably a bit more flex to be found though probably not much. If we ever get to go back to car shows it might be interesting to get up an articulation ramp and find the proper index numbers for various options.

Just watched the video and as I thought they do r&d the whole system to the specific car, I liked how he was saying that getting it right first time really means you haven't tried hard enough to find perfection.
