4wd light flashing and check engine light was created by steele
Hey I'm new here
I have two automatic Jimnys ( 2004 )
My first one is dying a death, so keeping for spares.
This weekend I collected a second one in seemingly excellent condition.. though after driving her 250km on various roads to get home the 'check engine' light came on.
She seems to be running smoothly despite this.
The more worrying thing.. I tried her 4wd on a forestry track this evening. All ok. Back into 2wd for main road and that's when issue started. Noise at first, then I felt 'discontented'(?) movement under the front centre of car. She lost speed and seemed to lose power and fluidity in wheels.
Got her home.
I just checked her in park with engine on and tried the 4wd gear which is now flashing.
Sorry this is so long winded! I'd like to know if it's safe to drive her tomorrow to a mechanic?
I believe I'll be needing help and advice from you all..

After coming out of 4x4 did you try reversing back a few metres? It sounds like the front drive didn't disconnect properly. I would not recommend driving it on road until it has been released. If possible jack up one front wheel at a time and see if it rotates by hand. It could be that something is stuck internally and needs more investigation.

I switched to 2wd in neutral with wheels straight but I didn't know about the reversing trick. Beige one had no problems with it.
That sounds about right.
I'll see what I can do without driving. Thanks so much!

Ok so when you say seized will it nit move at all or only a little bit before stopping? There's a few possibilities for the causes. If you have a read on the relevant sections about the 4x4 system in the wiki section in the top banner of the page that will help you match symptoms. Have a read and if it's still as clear as mud ask away, someone will be able to help.

It stopped moving altogether. Inside the wheel the brake was pushed up against the brake pad and kingpin axle (?) little plate and spring ring were completely mashed and broken.
Lucky I had a working jeep to replace the broken bits with and a patient mechanic.
It's sorted now I'll try not to wreck it again
Yes, I've had a read through now, the articles are brilliant. Lots of advice, if I can't find what I'm looking for I'll be back with any more questions
Thanks again, so good to know where I can get Jimny help!
