Hi people I got myself a little jimny will post pictures once i have washed it and made it look a little prettier,
Anyhow here is my problem I can engage 4wd and the 4wd light comes up on the dash but it does not seem to engage the hubs also when I put it in 4 Low the same light stays on is this normal with the lights, The hubs I have no idea I have check the pipe are connected correctly but still no joy any ideas on that one. I also got the 4wd light flashing at me this one happened a couple of times i can't seem the replicate this.
Problem 2
In the fuse box under the bonnet the Big battery fuse has been bodged up and some times did not work at all does anyone know the part number for this fuse.
Problem 3
My mate who works at a garage ordered my wheel bearings for my Jimny today they have come in but they seem the same as SJ ones there are 2 tapered bearings and even the locking tab washer, should the bearing be different to an SJ one. Also the brake pads he order me are the same I can check them but I want to know about the wheel bearings before I take everything apart.
If you can help on any of the above please do whilst I searching the rest of the internet.

1. 4wd light. The correct situation for the 4wd light is on in both 4WD high and 4WD low. If it is on this usually means everything is ok and the hubs are locked. You have to have the ignition on to do this. If you run the car and then stall the engine and then slip it in and out of 4WD you should be able to hear the hubs going click as you come in and out of 4WD. If it has never been off-roaded then the hubs may be stuck. If the 4WD light flashes then there is a problem, usually there is a split in the vacuum pipe.

3. This happened to me recently. One bearing supplier has the SJ bearing set listed as a Jimny set and therefore you get the wrong ones. In fact you can allegedly fit SJ bearings but this is normally in conjunction with removing the auto hubs and fitting manuals as the vacuum system will not work. I had to insist they source the correct bearing kit which is SKF VKBA3969 - accept no substitutes!

With the 4wd do you have to move as I have only drove about 10 metres with it and notice they are not locked also when you put it in 4wd from 2wd it does not light up straight away it some times take a few seconds, It has been used off road I can't here nowt when i switch between the 2 I will check all the pipe work tomorrow. If I remove one of the pipe that connect to the hub and switch between 2 and 4 should i feel something on that pipe.
The Fuses is a weird shape things and has long legs that go into the plastic and then the master battery lead screws thru the legs on both sides.
Is there a Wheel bearing kit from the like of motor factors is that the part number for the kit SKF VKBA3969 So it should be a solid bearing not 2 like the kit I got.

the car should go into 4hi and 4low stationary. I know ts good practice to select 4hi when moving, and only engage 4low when stationary but the car should happily go from 2wd to 4low stationary with the engine running. As has been said, when you select 2wd, you should hear the hubs "ping" and "clunk" when goign into 4wd

Sometimes you might have to drive a few feet forward or back to get it into 4WD and it can on occasions I found take a second or so for both the hubs to clik into place.
However, I had a solid light on the dash suggesting that there were no vacuum leaks but one hub stuck and would not engage.
My solution was to throw them away and buy fixed hubs from Darren at KAP and he machines down the bearing nut (which you need the special tool to remove, which Martin now sells in the shop on this site)to accept them.
This will mean I use more fuel and there will be more wear and tear on my front diff and front prop UJ's, but when I slip it into 4WD, I know I have 4WD.
I could not put some SJ manual freewheeling hubs on and I have a set on our SJ but I have been lazy so far and haven't but this could be the way to go for you.
I forget how much darren charges for the fixed hubs but you could get your bearing nuts machined down and buy some SJ freewheeling hubs off ebay for about £40.00 and you'll not have any more problems.

I been reading up on changing the hubs I still have my old SJ ones not FWH but fixed ones I might get the nut machined down when I am changing the wheel bearings and get rid of the problem matic vacum hubs. It seem quite a few people have problems with them.
