Something wrong with my rear prop. Picture within.

I have some questions. Today, whilst I was under my Jimny inspecting the carnage from smashing the transfer case off a big rock I noticed that the rear prop/drive shaft looked like it had emptied a fair bit of grease out of it plus looked like there was something missing. I think this damage was pre-transfer box damage but can't be 100% sure.

Is there a bearing in here? Rubber boot? The metal ring looks very like a bearing race? I just did 100 miles with it like this. I had no choice. It was not making much noise, well not enough to notice over the hum of mud terrains. You can see the grease that's flicked up round the underside of it.




What's missing/broken?

Just checked again and the ring appears to be a clamp for a rubber boot. The boot is leaking and flinging grease everywhere. Where can I get a replacement?

Ebay may have a second hand prop. I'm not sure if you can get the rubber boot and how to fit.

Someone may know on here.

Mine has exactly the same issue so il be interested to find out your cure for it.

Still not really found much out. I'm going to pull the shaft off at the weekend and will get a good look at it. Bound to be some way to repair it.

Yeah I was thinking about one of those but wasn't sure what the wide end of the boot would attach to which is why I wanted to pull the shaft to have a look at it. Was hoping that someone will have made this repair before lol

Does anyone know if the older type prop with the universal joint at both ends will fit the newer Jimny's.If they do you could have a cheap repair or is there a problem with them and thats why they were changed.

Bump. I've still not ordered anything. I had a look at the prop and it's not immediately obvious to me how the cone type boots will work given the shape/size of the joint on the prop.

Just buy the stretchy boot and give it a try! It's a stretchy, flexy rubber boot- it must fit one way or another, even if you have to trim it. It's designed for CV joints on FWD cars which operate at far greater angles and RPM than a Jimny propshaft so even if it doesn't look like a perfect fit it will no doubt do the job fine.

So I got one of those stretchy boots and the cone off eBay for a fiver and tried it. It's a little bodge-tastic if I'm honest... hopefully it keeps the crud out and the grease in.

The old boot is an odd design so I opened it up, filled with grease then just stuck this over the top. I'm not sure how long the new one will sit there as there's no groove for the boot to bite in to. It's not being stretched so hopefully it'll be alright. Criticisms/suggestions welcome, I'm here to learn.
