So, It's official I'm an idiot.
Was having trouble with the pushbutton 4wd enagement on my 2006 Jimny, repeatedly failing to engage 4wd, following the push clutch all way in, go through H4 into L4 etc, still having to try 5-10 times before actually engaging (despite what the lights on the dash were saying). Then it went in without me realising. I'm towing a boat on a front mounted towbar off a beach then up onto a road for 50m then, turning into a driveway.
I realised it had gone into 4wd when halfway through the turn (on ashphalt) it started to lock up.
All my previous 4wd's have been landcruisers which will take a bit of punishment so I thought, just push on.
Then there was a big bang from under the vehicle and the feeling of being 'locked up' dissapeared.
Now it will not engage 4wd whatever I do. Lights still come on as per usual.
where to start looking for problem?

Whoops, you want to be careful doing that. Land Cruisers are full time 4wd, very different!

the bang was probably a halfshaft snapping or a broken transfer box. If your lucky the transmission was just loudly "unwinding" itself.

Stick it on a ramp and check 2/4 wheel drive.

As iloveics says... Sounds like it could be a half shaft or cv

You can only run a jimny in 4wd on low traction surfaces... Gravel, sand, snow or mud

Lights coming on as usual points to either front diff issues or half shaft to me.

Never really thought about the lecy transfer box, but now I realise the manual lever has a lot more 'feel' behind it

Vehicle drives normally, no other symptom apart from the loud bang and no 4WD. Possible that the transfer case chain has broken? If I had broken a drive shaft I think it would be more obvious.

What is the weakest link?

ps in low range most landcruisers lock centre diff.

Either a cv, half shaft or diff, the transferbox will be fine. I couldnt tell my diff had fallen apart untill taken right out. Best to pull out the half shafts and if ok drop the diff, then ring Cam and it wont be to expensive to fix.
