Tappets/blown exhaust - HELP! was created by discotroll
Hi everyone -

Need some quick help!

On the way to work this morning my 02 started to make a loud tappet/blown exhaust noise. The noise increases when I accellarate and I can hear it when I'm sat in traffic but cruising or slowing down it isn't there. Power is no lower than normal and engine is running smoothly as ever (i.e. it does splutter or struggle on tick-over).

As I come to work in the dark and wont be able to look at things till home in the dark tonight I could do with some pointers in the meantime...

Many thanks,

DT.

UPDATE - noise appears to be coming from the manifold side, towards the back of the block - quite a metallic sound.....

Sounds like the manifold gasket has blown out can sound fairly harsh if its blowing that close to the block.
Also would check also that there is oil getting up to the head has the car been regualy serviced with frequent oil changes ? have seen 2 lately with camshaft/head faliure due to oil starvation.
What engine has your car got G or M series ?

Hi -

Engine is the older cam-belt style of engine (SOC?) - not sure if these have hydraulic tappets or not (??)...

So far I've only beem able to do a quick inspection so can only go as far as no oil pressure light and there is plenty of oil in the sump - car has been well serviced throughout its life. I got to start it up just now at work and despite sounding like a bag of nails it's running really smoothly....

Easy way to pin point an exhaust blow is get some hose pipe about an arms lenth put one end on your ear and move the other end around the joints and then you can hear the blow
