If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Alloy wheels corrode very quickly and leak.
(The tree huggers have stopped us using proper chromate primer on alloy, so the paint flakes off, corrosion builds between tyre and rim, which is porous, and the tyre goes down.)
Stick to steel if you can get them.

Cheers for the replies guys very interesting and informative next question if you were going to fit a 235 or above tyre on the rim would you go for a seven or eight inch wide wheel??

I have 235s on standard Jimmy alloys. They're 5,5" or 6" wide.. No problems with that

Possibly already been said above, but alloy rims are not even necessarily lighter than steels in most cases, especially factory fits. They're just there for looks alone. You can buy stronger, lighter 4x4 alloy rims, but they are not cheap.
