If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The small seal bears on the half shaft, not the CV joint.
If the halfshaft has a worn seal face, you need a new one, or the old one re-metalled and ground.
Cheapest option is a complete halfshaft and CV from a breaker. (Doubt if they will split the shaft from the CV and sell just the shaft)
You can then knock your good CV off the old shaft, and eBay it, or keep it as a spare.

Yes the halfshaft is the left hand side. The raised shiny bump just to the left of the CV joint is where the seal runs.
It is possible to get a very thin metal shell that superglues over this area to repair the seal area, but no-one in this country seems to stock them.
I don't know what holds the CV joint part on, sometimes you have to remove a circlip to get it off, other times you just hold the halfshaft and knock the CV off with a soft hammer.
Double check with your mechanic, as he will be fitting it, that this is what you need.
A new halfshaft from Suzuki is probably well over £100, a CV with shaft is £75 -£95 at a breakers. The half shafts are handed (one is shorter) , the CV isn't.

There must be a severe problem if you have a leak when running around in 2wd, as the front axle doesn't rotate.
Your mechanic would have re-packed the CV and partially filled the sphere with grease, it may be this that is on the outside of the sphere? Axle oil stinks to high heaven.
It will be ok to keep running round in 2wd as long as you don't get oil on the tyre, the axle will not completely drain away, and it doesn't need any oil in, as it should remain stationary.
Ensure that the hub is working on that side, as changing the bearings often gets grease blocking the air passages from the small metal spigot pipes on the main casting. (easiest check is to remove the black outer hub and check that you can blow easily in through the short metal pipes)
Try googling for "jimny manual download" the file is around on the 'net and is about 60mb as a pdf
