rear axle oil seal

right did not have oil leak when wheel bearing died so change wheel bearing and seals then after 1000 or so miles it had a leak so mail martin and he sorted me a seal out on the repair in notices that the seal i put in was smaller by 1mm so to tight i thinks thats why it failed but it leaking again after 500 or so mile any ideas guys

I suspect you have bent the axle shaft, thats the most common cause of repeated failure of the oil seal, unless the collar itself is not on straight. It is very easy to put a small bend in the axle shaft.

Not sure what you mean by the seal being 1mm smaller so "tight". The oil seals are all a standard size (for the rear its 48 x 62) and I only ever have had 48 x 62 stocked.

The oil seal depth does vary by batch, some are 9mm and some are 8mm. This is the depth of the seal casing and is not an issue for this form of oil seal.

So you may get either 48 x 62 x 9 or 48 x 62 x 8 but both have the same inner and outer diameter which is the crucial measurement.

Alternatively, do you off-road in an area where there is a higher proportion of sand in the soil.

As you can see, mine typically last 1,500 miles maximum

silly question you are putting the seal in the right way round and all the way in with the plastic cup behind also in the right way round

its the drivers side that leaks the short side of axle seal and plastic bit was put back as it came out lol

the seal i had with bearing kit martin was 47/62/8 the new one you kindly sent me was 48/62/9 so i thoght thats why it leaked the first time but its leaking again :-@

do you think i have bent it guys

might try one more seal if it fails again will have to get new axle

mine is leaking as well this is the 3rd tim in a year what is the condition of the collar was it slightly damaged when replaced is the bearing and collar all the way on are you putting a little oil to help it slide over the collar

find a good flat surface and roll the shaft see if you can see a slight bend or use a level/straight edge
