Hi
Tried to replace my kingpin bearings yesterday on our 2006 vvti with abs and came across the known issue regards no access to the hub bolts with Anything other than a ring spanner.
Inevitable result was rounded bolt head as its all rusted and looks like it will need serious heat from a torch to budge them.
Checking previous threads here can I confirm that I can still replace kingpin bearings and oil seal by removing dust sealing ring and kingpins in situ as such and then taking off the whole hub?
Going to have another try this week.
We live in an isolated area in Scotland and there can be snow and ice and road salt on the road easily from October to April and although the jimny is ideal for this climate and location and the body seems rust proof the nuts and bolts on the underside seem to be made out of really soft steel??
We had the car since new and I have been wax oiling the chassis and bolts every year but still have corroded bolts.
Thanks again

yes, you can get the hub apart enough without undoing those bolts

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

If you are really short on time:
Remove wheel Place flat on floor flange upwards
Remove small bolts holding large oil seal around hub.
Remove calliper and hang up safe.
Split track rod & tie rod balljoints.
Disconnect rubber vacuum pipes
Remove 4 top & 4 bottom kingpin bolts
Remove kingpins.
Snatch off complete hub, with brake disk, driveshaft etc
Place Hub in wheel, so it stands up.
(may need services of A.N.Other so it doesn't fall.)
Get A.N.Other to remove any gunge &crud from Driveshaft & hub cavity with paper towels whilst you knock out bearing races.
Fit new outer races.
Change oilseal.
Grease cavity
Feed driveshaft in replace hub & bearings (yes it will go straight back, you may need to twiddle hub to engage.
Replace kingpins
Replace oilseal.
Replace calliper and steering joints.
Replace pipes

Hi
I really appreciate all the help I have had with this. Thank you for the advice.
Will have a try again after work some day this week.
My wife drives about 20 miles a day in the jimny going to work and although its losing oil I guess it's not going to knacker the diff etc In the meantime.
Thanks for the pics. It's a lot easier to figure
Regards

Hi
Thanks to advice on this site managed to change the kingpin bearings today. 4 hours as everything stuck &covered in rust.
The abs sensor was stuck but eventually freed
Only problem is I that I think I put too little grease in the knuckle as I still got three quarters of the tub I bought on this sites shop left. The bearings are well greased though.
If I take the top king pin out I can put more grease in but I was thinking that unless its filled completely how does the top bearing get greased ?
Can I just leave as is or do you reckon I should bung more in?
Cheers
