Transfer box 51 reg jimny was created by Freer
I have a 51 reg manual jimny which has picked up a problem. Every so often i can be driving along in 2H and there will be a grinding from the drive train. Once i slow down to about 10mph there is a clunk and something sounds like it re-engages. I might then be fine for days.
The vacume hubs are working fine and it selects 4H and 4L fine.
The only thing i have noticed which i am not sure is correct or not is if it is in 2H and i go underneath it i cannot turn the rear prop shaft as expected, but this is the same for the front prop shaft. I expected the front prop shaft to be dis-engaged and able to spin by hand. Is this correct or not.

You wont be able to turn the rear prop if the rear wheels are on the ground.
You should be able to turn the front if the front hubs are not engaged and the car is in 2H.
A replacement transferbox should be very cheap as a'lot of us bin them.
Remember not to engage 4L or 4H on a dry surface or it will cause damage.
Welcome to Bigjimny.

this sounds like an issue that has been queried quite a few times before on here. i have had a similar noise, usually brought on by going over a bump and i think its the vac hubs not completely coming back out of lock position. i have bought manual hubs to cure this

I think you might be right. I will have a look into wether the hubs are dis- engaging properly. Thanks for the reply. Cheers ads
