What oil suits a Jimny best?? was created by P.Y.
...what oil do you use? What do you think is best suited to the Jimny? What would you suggest for an engine that has done 21,000 miles (2005 twin-cam), about to set off across Africa? Advice would be appreciated as its clearly a critical decision with 8,000 miles of varied terrain and temperatures.

I can't offer a lot of help here. I use general Halfords Oil as mine does less than a 1000 miles per year and spends most of its life in the garage.

Earlier Jimny engines (not the twin cam you have) did suffer from oil starvation to the No.4 cylinder end of the cam shaft, I know of some that siezed.

Take a look at Castrol edge 5w40. It is supposed to be a long life oil, suitable to replace the Volkswagen long life oil, and Castrol actually recommend it for a Jimny.

Personally, any good semi, or full synthetic 10w40 would be my choice.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

If it's a VVT engine use 5w 30 the 10w 40 is a bit too thick for the
Valves to operate correctly!!!

Might be worth investing in some of the STP oil treatment.. Teflon for your engine's insides ... Just "In case" you damage the sump, you'll have enough lubrication in the engine to avoid a Seize.

Have taken all of the advice of the above. Halfords oils are supplied by Comma. Nothing wrong in that. They have to get it from someone. Their 20-50 is a dead-ringer copy of Duckhams even the same colour green, and comes in a tin, with change out of 20 quid, but,a bit thick for the Jimney tho. Duckhams is no more.

We have gone with the advice and settled on 5w-30 Edge, Castrols synthetic. An oil expert from Elf stopped me buying their 15-40 saying that the performance, motor sport sexy stuff is all very well but degrades quickly and doesnt last with its viscosity. So we have chosen a longer-life oil. It will travel with a tin of STP for thickening it up after the twisty sprint bits in Kent and France before Africa. Thanks for the advice.

Has anyone thought of giving the engine more oil capacity by having a longer oil filter? There looks like there is room. Is there an alternative oil filter (ie, from another car) that fits that is bigger? This would, in theory, be cooling the engine oil more as well, surely. Oil and engine therefore lasting a tad longer.

There may be different oil filters around as the M13 series of engines is also used in other, more performance orientated, Suzukis such as the Swift, so my guess is that other filters may be available.

(ok so its a G13B engine!)
