Hi - Yes and No! The earlier gearbox will bolt up to your engine without problem, but the rear mounting is different and the prop to the transfer box is different so you would need to source one of those as well. But there is another issue and that is the gearbox ratios are different - the earlier gearbox is higher geared and has an overdrive 5th gear. It would probably be less problematical to try and find one of the later gearboxes unless you are planning other changes. For instance if you were to fit a rocklobster transfer box then the earlier gearbox would be better as otherwise the car ends up very low geared for road use.
Not sure if this helps or adds to the confusion!

Hey, thank you very, very much for your sincere and honest reply :). I dont plan on doing any further changes , but ideally would just like to replace the R72 gearbox !!!
I am finding it very difficult to locate one so at the moment I am considering in dismantling my gearbox and actually try and fix the reverse gear problem!! After all , it is just the reverse gear , but it must be the actual gear selector which is 'bent' or the woodruff key which holds the reverse gear pinion in place has come 'free'for no apparent reason!
again , thank you very much for your help :)

regards
Mark.

I would take the gearbox apart first, and see what's wrong with it before getting a new one. I'm kinda new with Jimny's, but it was a very common problem back in the day with SJ410's that the fork that moved the reverse gear got bent, and the gear wouldn't engage fully so it stripped the tooth from it very quickly.

How did it broke? Just suddenly you didn't find the gear, or did you hear any unwanted sounds coming from the transmission when you tried to shift?
