Does any one know the approximate steel thicknesses of the following: Jimny body panels. Jimny chassis members. I am quite new to welding and have a good machine and have had some introductory classes. Anyone got any tips for strengthening up my x plate jim for off road use. ie underbody reinforcement plates, body overplating, rust repair etc. Any help greatly appreciated thanks.
Hi so you are after some adice well I will give you some to get the ball rolling.
For rust repair I use metal from an old washing machine when welding the rusty patches in the tool compartment. And when welding on thin stuff I spot weld every inch all around the plate and then spot weld beside each spot until the whole welding edge is filled. As for the chassis it is incredibly strong but if you are intending to put an external roll cage then that means welding to the chassis. An external cage will help but not stop flex of the chassis as the cage ads weight. When going about welding a cage to a chassis it would be wise to study a biggish 360 excavator to see how they make the plating for the digging boom. The plating with round holes is to allow strengthening with less weight. Plating like this would be ideal for the sides of the chassis to stop ripping and give a good purchase to the bars for rock sliders.
