you might be right about it being disconnected as there is a strange sound at the lock when turning the key. Thanks for you help. I think I may have to seek some help from a garage.
I had the same problem with my Grand Vitara, the inductive ring had become loose so needed re-positioning, just take off the plastic cowling, should be just 2 screws underneath and check that it is secure around the barrel. Should only take 2 minutes to check.
