Hi all
What are your recomended winches for use on a standard bumper? I have seen some realy neat jobs of fitting them in, but i wanted to know what fits and what doesnt. If you could please give make and model that would be grate.

I fitted one of these
T-Max EW-6500 12V 6500 lbs Winch......Rated Line Pull: 6500Lbs.(2950Kgs.)
it's not as wide as a full size winch with a narrower drum . but it still has 24 metres of winch line.

The ebay item id given is invalid, no result has been sentNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI have one of these, goes nicely between the chassis rails and stays within the front bumper
Its quite slow but powerful enough to recover the jimny from most situations, if you were properly bogged it would maybe struggle a bit, have never tried it wil a snatch block.

You will need one that is not too wide to fit between the chassis ends. This generally rules out external braked winches such as Superwinches and Goodwinches.
The good news is that those winches with an "in the drum" brake are cheaper, such as Champion and T-Max as the better well know brands. Martin runs a Champion.
The bad news is that you are not supposed to use Plasma rope on these internally braked winches and pay out without free-spooling or lowering the car on the rope more than a few metres due to heat build up weakening the rope.
If you always plan to use steel wire rope It's not a worry or if you are ok using free-spool and pulling in.
Some believe (myself included) that Plasma rope is much safer. It is about 3-4 times more expensive though and if you look after steel wire, wear gloves and respect it, using a winch blanket every time, it can be ok.
If you don't plan on dangling your car on a rope and just use it to unstick you from mud then a cheap plasma may suffice. But you don't want to then get daring and hang your Jim Jam at 45 degrees up a high bank on a cheap eBay rope! If you are you probably will want a cage and proper winch bumper by then and upgrade to an externally braked winch.
It's swings and roundabouts. Expensive swings and roundabouts though!
