Earthing points at the rear?

I have a CB ariel mount on the roof bar at the back of the jimny....is there any obvious/good points to link an earth wire from the mount itself...stood out there for ages wondering where to send a cable! Cheers

why don't you just put the CB Antennae (ariel) straight into roof above door, like I have done - good earth!! All sorted.

Jalapeño, IISY?

Because that's not good enough ;) You're thinking of an electrical ground, which is more easy to do. However, for the CB antenna you need a "RF ground" which is not that easy. Even when mounted on the door the RF ground is not good enough because of the hinge and you will get crappy SWRs. Trust me, I've spent a *lot* of time trying to get a good RF ground without putting holes in the Jimny's shell.

JonathonMarshall: my CB antenna mount is screwed to one of the roof rails, however this gives you no useful RF ground. So, I had two grounding straps made from the outer wiring of a coax cable running from each screw of the mount to the two screws in the roof which secure the roof rail end. Of course, you have to brush down the paint from the mount until you reach bare metal, use crimped/soldered ring connectors at both ends and make sure you use some kind of serrated washer for the roof part (the idea being the metal teeth of the washer will pierce the paint a little and give you a good connection). With this, I've managed to get a SWR of about 1,4-1,5 which is ok.

You can read more here if you want to go crazy, I certainly did: www.k0bg.com/ground.html

Edit: Maverick, sorry, I though you recommended a door mounting bracket. Piercing the roof is certainly the best option ... if you convince yourself to do it :)

I put my cb aerial mount through the bonnet - about 1/3rd of the way from screen to front, and it works very well. Its also easy to get the coax from the aerail to the inside of the car. You just have to be bit careful when you drill the hole. I put masking tape on the bonnet first to top the drill running across the bonnet! I just remove the aerial when I'm not using it and have a cover that screws over the mounting.

I just used a ground independent aerial and magnetic mount and slipped the lead under the front hood. I don't know what the strength is but if I use the full wave aerial I can receive and send to about 25k's and with the 1/4 wave antenna, about 6-8 k's which suits me more as the trucks and earthmoving equipment I need to contact are generally within 50-100 metres of me.

Don't you get interference (white noise) from the ignition system ?
