Jimny towing limit. was created by Nobby22
Hi all
I was looking into towing with the old jimny. According to the manual it should only tow 450kg braked and 350kg un-braked. However if you look at the VIN plate its gross towed mass is 2720. So potential you could tow up to 1300kg? I know they recomend only towing 85% of the vehicles weight. No need to tell me towing in a jimny is not ideal because using a nother car is not an option. I just want to know what i can tow legaly in this country, because even a 450kg trailer is crap! I have been on towing websites that give 1300kg as a max figure. Is it up to the country they are registered in to decided its max towing limit? You would think this sort of thing would be made cristal clear.
Cheers

I have just had a look at the V5 for my Jimny and it gives a towing weight braked of 1300kg and unbraked of 350.

Extract from manual.
"If there is a regualtion which specifies maximum trailer weights greater than the capacities shown above; vehciles sold in these countries have towing capacities which match the maximum trailer weight permitted"
So does that mean the "maximum trailer weight permitted" is 1300kg? Surely the VIN plate can not be wrong?
So confusing. :S

I think a lot of trailers up to 750kg are unbraked. Have you had a look at the Ifor Williams website - I'm sure you would find some useful information there?

It says 1300kg, quite a bit for a wee car like that. But we managed to tow 2500kg with 5 people in the car! It was a bit dodgey trying to stop in the rain, so we had to drive in 4wd to the centre diff kept all 4 wheels braking! I wouldn't recommend doing this that often but it was the only (safe ish) way we could tow home. Tough wee cars!
