Next door doesn't have a dog :( ;)

My point was not that I expected them to make a loud noise but if you don't know what you are listening for you probably won't hear it. I had my ear virtually right up against 3 jimnys front wheels as they engaged 4WD and I couldn't say for sure I heard something that made me say definately one way or another that something had happened other than the whir of the vacuum pump.

my personal opinion of the standard jimny hubs is throw them at next doors dog & fit some manual hubs at least you know that they will work when you need them

Yup, manual hubs are the better option.

Or just permanently lock the standard hubs!

Thank you all for the info.

I was standing outside the car, and definitely heard the hubs engaging. There was some gentle noise , as the owner put it on 4wdL.
However, while he was doing so, I was pointing to my printed check up list,(downloaded from here:) insisting that, as the steering is not "stiff and Juddery" then the 4wdL must be faulty.

I guess, equipped with all this new information, I should make the journey of 60+ miles back to inspect and buy it....

Any other tips or things, unmentioned yet, to look 4 ?

cheers

Check the boot floor for rust.
